'Depressed' women seek breast enlargements

Women seeking breast enhancements may are afflicted by mental health issues, it's been revealed.

A group of scientists attending the British Mental Society conference says women wanting their breasts enlarged tended to suffer more from depression, anxiety and occasional self-esteem compared to general population.

Dr Elizabeth Campbell and her team in the College of Glasgow in comparison 37 women asking for breast surgery in an NHS clinic with 27 in the general population.

They told the society's annual conference in Bournemouth that ladies seeking breast enhancement 'reported more depression, anxiety and occasional self confidence compared to comparison group'. These were also more prone to have dysfunctional ideas about appearance.

Around three quarters from the women seeking surgery were approved for treatment after going through a mental examination. Most were aged within their late 20s and 30s, and lots of were seriously distressed by their small breast size.

Dr Campbell states, 'The problem for that cosmetic surgeons is how you can decide who should and should not possess the surgery.

'For many people you may be concerned there might be adverse effects. Some women may have uncommon anticipation or think it'll solve their existence problems.'

A psychiatrist who helps surgeons screen women seeking breast enhancement at Northamptonshire NHS Trust defended the concept of dealing with them within the Health Service.

Owen Hughes, that has been seeing women requesting the cosmetic treatment since 1997, was adamant it had been more cost-effective than therapy.

He states, 'My argument is it's cheaper and much more effective to provide women the operation rather than search around within their past. If you will find lots of mental issues, we'll avoid surgery.

'Some people would say it's as valid like a knee alternative.'

He stated breast enhancement alone could cure a lady of immense mental suffering - there is anecdotal evidence the operation could change individuals lives.

Women were averted from treatment when they made an appearance to possess serious psychopathalogical problems that wouldn't be solved by breast enhancement.

They also says growing amounts of ladies were seeking breast enhancement in NHS plastic surgery treatment centers.

Mr Hughes stated the amount of breast enhancement patients observed in Northamptonshire had risen from a couple of each year in 1997 to around 5 or 6 every few several weeks.
